Chemistry · pH
Our sampleWhat is the pH of a 0.001 mol/L solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl)?
Tap an answer to see the explanation.
Show the answerThe answer
The answer is C: 3.
- A) Wrong. pH 1 needs 0.1 mol/L of H+ ions.
- B) Wrong. pH 2 needs 0.01 mol/L of H+ ions.
- C) Right. HCl is a strong acid, so all of it splits into ions. H+ is 0.001 mol/L, or 10⁻³ mol/L. So pH = -log(10⁻³) = 3.
- D) Wrong. pH 11 is basic, not acidic. You get it from 0.001 mol/L of NaOH, a strong base.

Good to know
- We do not copy or explain the booklet's own questions, so you still need the booklets.
- Comenius has not published its maximum score, so our practice shows how many you got right.

All sales are final: we do not give refunds (Terms, section 2). If you live in the EU and buy as a consumer, the mandatory consumer law of your country also protects you (Terms, section 12).
The booklets
Step 1: buy the booklets from the faculty
The key at the back gives the right answers, but no reasons. The exam shows fewer options than the booklet, so learn why each statement is true or false.
- Buy them from the faculty: the English PDF or a printed copy. See the prices.
- The faculty takes no responsibility for copies from other sources.
Exam dates
Step 2: pick your one exam date
You can register only once per programme each academic year. Pick the date that fits your visa, your school year and your other exams.
- The 2027 registration dates are not published yet. Ask the Study Department now.
- Do not assume the early exams work like the August one.
- Only the faculty sets the dates: check them on its admission page.
After the exam
After the exam: results and enrolment
The faculty publishes no pass mark, and its pages do not say how you see your result. So ask the Study Department before your exam.
- See when results came last year.
- After admission, health papers can follow, and nostrification if you need it.
- If you need nostrification, you cannot enrol without it. See its fee.

Comenius
Your Comenius questions, answered
Is it 800 points or 200 points now? Do I lose points?
No minus points. A wrong answer gets 0 points, and choosing more than one option also gets 0 points. The maximum score is not published. So never leave a question blank.
Do I still need the Comenius booklets? Why pay for new questions?
Yes, you need the booklets: the exam asks only booklet questions. The booklet key gives the right answers, but no reasons. Our practice teaches the reasons, with new questions on the same school biology and chemistry. It does not explain or copy the booklet's own questions, so it cannot follow them question by question. It also gives full timed exams at the real pace, and your score by topic. If you only want the booklet answers explained, our practice is not that. See where to buy the booklets, and their prices.
Where do I buy the booklets? Is there a free PDF?
Not from the faculty. Every exam question comes from the faculty's two official booklets, Biology and Chemistry, with 500 questions each and the answers at the back. The faculty sells them: English PDF EUR 31.98, printed copy EUR 33.60 (posted within Slovakia only). The faculty takes no responsibility for copies from other sources. Then follow our booklet study plan.
The booklet has more options than the exam. Did the answers change?
Each booklet question has 8 possible answers, and the key at the back gives the right ones without reasons. The exam shows fewer options, and one is correct. The faculty does not say which ones you will see. So do not just memorise the key. Learn why each statement is true or false.
If I fail in March, can I retake the exam in June?
No. You can register for General Medicine only once each academic year. So if it goes badly, you wait a year for Comenius. SZU is a separate university with its own exam day. Apply to both, and you get a second chance in the same year. Read the SZU guide.
Which exam date should I choose if I am not from the EU?
You can register only once per study programme each year. You need a secondary school diploma (EQF level 4). Applicants from outside the EU should take the March or June exam, because a visa takes time. We cannot advise on visas.
What is SCIO? Do I need a 360-degree camera for the online exam?
SCIO runs the faculty's online exam. The faculty's pages do not list the equipment you need. SCIO's rules for this faculty are on its own page, so check them there before you register.
Who do I ask at Comenius, and what do I write?
The faculty's guides give a postal address, not an email. Post a letter to the Department for Study in English Language, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Spitalska 24, 813 72 Bratislava, Slovakia. For trouble with the online application, the faculty's manual gives a phone number: +421 2 9010 4444. Questions to copy:
- "When does registration for the March 2027 exam open and close?"
- "By when must my recognition statement and translated diploma arrive for the March date?"
- "How will I see my exam result?"
- "I will send a recognition statement. Do I also need nostrification?"
- "Does the faculty offer student housing?"
What documents do I need?
- To apply: Apply online in the university's e-application (switch it to English). Attach a scan of your ID or passport, proof that you paid the EUR 99 fee, and your secondary school diploma. Medical fitness, the Hepatitis B vaccination and nostrification can follow after admission.
- Recognition: Finished school in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, the UK, Ukraine, China or Russia? Print a recognition statement from the Slovak ministry's online navigator. It is valid only with a notarised copy of your diploma, translated into Slovak by a certified translator. Send both to the Study Department, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Spitalska 24, 813 72 Bratislava. From any other country, a Regional School Administration Office decides. If you need nostrification, start it after admission: you cannot enrol without it (fee EUR 7 or EUR 40). The faculty's guides do not say whether the statement replaces nostrification.
The faculty gives no price or time for the translation, so book a translator early. You apply yourself: we are not an agent, and we do not apply for you.
School in Germany or Austria: what do I need, and when?
Ask the faculty before you apply, not after admission: its guides leave one question open.
- Before you apply: print a recognition statement from the Slovak ministry's website. It shows that your school-leaving certificate counts in Slovakia. Ask the faculty by when it must arrive.
- With it: a notarised copy of your Abitur or Matura (a notary at home is fine), translated into Slovak by a certified translator from the official Slovak registry.
- After admission: maybe nostrification (recognition by a Slovak regional school office). The faculty's guides do not say if you need it as well. If you do, you cannot enrol without it, and the faculty calls it a long process. See its fee.
Post a letter to: Department for Study in English Language, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Spitalska 24, 813 72 Bratislava, Slovakia. Question to copy: "I finished school in Germany (or Austria). I will send a recognition statement. Do I also need nostrification before I can enrol?"
Moving to Germany or Austria later? We cannot advise on transfers. Our Slovakia guide says which two offices decide, with a question to copy in German.
What does Comenius cost?
- Fee to apply: EUR 99 per application. You do not get it back.
- Tuition: General Medicine: EUR 13,000 a year. Dentistry: EUR 14,500 a year. The faculty guarantees the same fee every year of the standard study length.
- Booklets: sold by the faculty. See the booklet prices.
I learned biology and chemistry in German. Which English words do I need?
Both exams are in English, so learn the English words for what you know. Here are 10 key words from SZU's topic list, with our German translations:
- solubility product: Löslichkeitsprodukt
- stoichiometry: Stöchiometrie
- moles: Stoffmenge (Mol)
- equilibrium constant: Gleichgewichtskonstante
- oxidation numbers: Oxidationszahlen
- osmotic pressure: osmotischer Druck
- Krebs cycle: Citratzyklus
- electron transport chain: Atmungskette
- inheritance: Vererbung
- Hardy-Weinberg law: Hardy-Weinberg-Gesetz
Both exams test school biology and chemistry, so the words help with the booklets too. The free checklist PDF has SZU's whole topic list in both languages.
